The Garrison Growlers

Step aboard our special train on Saturday 2nd May (see below for departure points and estimated times) for a daytrip from Central Scotland and journey along the breathtaking West Highland Line to the iconic Highland town of Fort William, nestled at the foot of Ben Nevis. From the waters of Loch Long to the vast, wild expanse of Rannoch Moor, the journey showcases Scotland’s landscapes in a way that only rail travel can. Every mile offers a new view, a fresh perspective and memories that will stay with you long after the journey ends.

And once you arrive in Fort William, you are free to wander round the ‘Outdoor capital of the UK’ which has a mix of new developments, fantastic local businesses, great places to eat and drink and fantastic scenery all around; you will rarely be without a loch or mountain vista!

Discover the West Highland Museum with fascinating stories about the Fort William area and its rich history; the World War II Commandos who trained nearby; the natural world and of course The Jacobites and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Run by friendly volunteers, it is free to enter and donations are always very welcome.

A new exciting addition to Fort William is the independent Highland Cinema. This charming building has brightened up the town centre and Cameron Square, and the Café Bar is reason alone to visit, even if you don’t have quite the time to watch a film.

And if you fancy a wander back in time, then walk along Wades Road (an old Military Road built by General Wade) and through Black Parks and have a look around Old Inverlochy Castle, which dates back to the 13th Century. Although now a ruin this was one of the most important castles in Scottish history and was the backdrop to both the major historical battles of Inverlochy.

On our train you will sit in beautifully restored British Rail MK1 carriages, combining classic comfort with timeless charm. Powering the train are two iconic English Electric Class 37 locomotives, engines that defined the West Highland route during the 1980s and 1990s. Our very own class 37, 37403 ‘Isle of Mull’ will feature alongside another classmate throughout your journey.

And throughout our journey to and from Fort William we will keep you suitably fed and watered, with a choice of at seat silver dining with a hearty breakfast on our way north and a four course evening dinner served on the return OR feel free to visit our well stocked buffet car with a large selection of hot and cold drinks, morning hot rolls and lots of snacks to keep the children happy.

Whether you’re a lover of scenic vistas, a railway enthusiast, or simply seeking a unique way to explore Scotland, this tour promises an experience like no other.

A Journey Through Scotland’s Most Spectacular Landscapes

Join us on our first Railtour of 2026 as we return to our traditional heartland for a truly unforgettable journey across Scotland by rail. From historic towns and iconic engineering to remote wilderness and dramatic Highland scenery, this is a rail experience that belongs on every travellers bucket list.

Our adventure begins at Glenrothes with Thornton, before heading to the busy Fife town of Kirkcaldy to pick up further passengers and then along the scenic Fife Coast, where superb views of the Firth of Forth unfold outside your window. We continue to Inverkeithing, a convenient pick-up point with a large free car park and easy access from the M90.

Soon after departure, one of the world’s great railway moments awaits as we cross the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Forth Bridge. This iconic structure is always a highlight, offering breathtaking views and an unforgettable sense of history.

We then turn west towards the Edinburgh to Glasgow main line, calling at Falkirk High before enjoying a spirited run across this stretch of railway to the outskirts of Glasgow where we then join the North Clyde Line, and make our final pick-up stop at Westerton.

We then head along the banks of the River Clyde and Helensburgh Upper marks the start of the world famous West Highland Line, voted the greatest rail journey in the world. From here, the scenery transforms dramatically as we travel alongside Gare Loch, home to Faslane Naval Base, before continuing past the striking waters of Loch Long.

The line then skirts the stunning northwestern shores of Loch Lomond, where forested hills, shimmering water, and ever-changing light create postcard-perfect views. Climbing steadily through Glen Falloch, we reach Crianlarich, where the Oban branch diverges to the left.

Beyond Crianlarich, the landscape opens up as we pass through Tyndrum, uniquely served by two stations, and continue to the beautifully remote Bridge of Orchy. Soon after, we enter the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor, one of the most breathtaking and isolated regions in Britain. Keep watch for herds of deer often visible from the train.

We then reach Corrour, the most remote station in the UK and the summit of the line at 1,347 feet above sea level, accessible only by rail. From here, the route descends from high above Loch Treig, offering spectacular elevated views before passing through the dramatic Monessie Gorge.

Fort William and Free Time

Our journey north concludes with arrival at Fort William, nestled beneath Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, in time for lunch and a leg stretch. Guests will enjoy approximately two hours of free time to explore the town, with the main High Street just minutes from the station. Whether you choose a relaxed lunch, a scenic stroll, or a browse through local shops, Fort William offers the perfect Highland welcome.

Return Journey

After our break, we rejoin the train for the return journey along the same stunning route. With changing light and fresh perspectives, the landscapes of the West Highland Line reveal new beauty on the way home, bringing this remarkable day to a relaxed and memorable conclusion.

The train is operated by our Partners at Locomotive Services Limited.
